  The Buzz: 7/17/2008

After a short hiatus, The Buzz is back with a brief edition

Movie buzz

It seems pointless to discuss any other movie besides The Dark Knight. I could perhaps go into the ridiculousness of another movie (Mamma Mia!) opening against The Dark Knight, but I won’t. This movie has become, easily, the most anticipated movie that has come out in my lifetime (a mere twenty one years) because of the general comic hype, the success of the first movie, and the dramatic passing of Heath Ledger. That final factor has pushed the movie’s audience far beyond it’s target as fans of Ledger’s earlier work (various romantic comedies targeted at younger, female teens) rush to see Ledger’s final film. On the other end of the rope the comic fanboys are near to frothing at the mouth because of the reports that Ledger’s Joker is so psychotic, so pure, so true to the character. Ebert’s review is glowing to a fault – praising the movie as something more than just another comic movie. The real question becomes, how much money will the movie make in its opening? I’m going to throw out a number: $95 million.

TV buzz

Summer TV – why does it suck? Seriously, I’ve already written about how my most anticipated show (Scarlett) turned out to be little more than an advertisement. This crushing blow, combined with the reality of summer filler flowing over the airwaves, offers little entertainment and more annoyance than anything else.

What do you think about…

Celebrities selling pictures of their kids? All I read about now is about how Nicole Kidman is so radical because she does not want to sell the pictures of her new baby. Or how JLo and Marc Anthony sold their pictures for seven million dollars and spent the money on themselves or speculation about which magazine will get the pictures for Angelina and Brad’s new babies. I understand that that the people who buy these gossip magazines are the same people who go weak at the sight of baby pictures but why does the industry support this? If we protest the extent of paparazzi against stars who are “adults,” why don’t we protest the commercialization of individuals who can’t make their own decisions yet?

On the web

Top 10 Philosophical Movies – There are some good ones on here and great choices if you want a movie to think about – but if you’re tired – you better have a back up option because you need all your senses for most of these.

Sex and the City and Ancient Mythology? – I know I’m behind the curve on all the buzz over the Sex and the City Movie and the possibility of a second one and yadda yadda yadda, but this is an interesting article from awhile back that compares Sex and the City’s storylines to that of ancient Greek mythology – pretty interesting for those of you who like the Classics.

Comic Cringes – Hopefully we won’t see any of these this weekend when every person in America clamors to see The Dark Knight, but here is an amusing list of the big gaffes from comic adaptations who aren’t quite up to the level as TDK.

Um…really?

Are people actually considering other candidates besides Heath Ledger for the Oscar?

Who am I?
