  The Buzz: 6/12/2008

I know I keep saying “I’m back” to the extent that it has no meaning besides drawing attention to my lack of discipline in maintaining any consistency in this daily column, but…The Buzz is back!

Movie buzz

The Happening (release June 13, 2008; click here for preview) – I didn’t even give M. Night the chance to disappoint me and I didn’t even see Lady in the Water. This movie is interesting because it looks like you really have no clue what is going on and no clue how to fight it.
So for a suspense thriller that bodes pretty well. And I give the movie a bunch of credit for not ruining itself in it’s trailer like Lady did. Then there is the fact that I’m a big fan of Zooey Deschanel and Mark Wahlberg is pretty good too. But since it is still an M. Night film, this could go either way – hopefully it’s good. (enjoy the standard/cliched M. Night movie poster to the left)

The Incredible Hulk (release June 13, 2008; click here for preview) – I am still not sure if I want to pay this movie. The first Hulk was one of the only movies I actually fell asleep in. It’s also hard to get me motivated to see a Hulk movie because his character just does not interest me that much. That being said, watching some of the trailers for the movie have piqued my interest (a word of caution here is that the trailers show large portions of the movie it seems). Considering that I am a big Edward Norton fan and have liked Liv Tyler for awhile, there’s a SMALL chance this movie might not suck.

Get Smart (release June 20, 2008; click here for preview) – Simply put this movie looks HYSTERICAL. Hopefully all the funny parts aren’t in the previews because those are REALLY FUNNY. I’m hoping that this could be one of the funniest “action” comedies in awhile. It looks like The Rock is actually well used here, Anne Hathaway looks really hot (she’s coming into her own here in a genre entirely different from Devil) and Steve Carrell is back to doing what he does best (after travesties like Evan and Dan). BUT, at the back of my head is the constant “remember I, Spy?” And that gives me pause, but hopefully the movie delivers. Hell, if its good I wouldn’t mind another one (Get Smarter maybe).

TV buzz

For me I have all the time in the world to watch TV while also seemingly having no time. That makes little sense but instead of
clearing things up I will say that I was looking forward to the new show "Scarlett.” Then I found out that that was just ingenious viral marketing (for computer monitors!) and that the “real” “Scarlett” TV show is nothing like it. So that was disappointing. But if THAT was a TV show, I would try to find time to watch it.

What do you think about…

Kobe’s Lakers down 2-1. I might be in the minority here but I have always been a fan of Phil Jackson. Not just because he is a bad-ass, but also because he led my Bulls to six championships and even when the Jerries drove him away, I still loved him. I also love Kobe. If I have to explain myself you probably can’t be convinced anyway. And despite the Celtics having the best record in the NBA (a stat that rarely means championship) I thought the Lakers would do pretty well. We shall see. It’d be nice to see Phil pass Red for Championship rings.

On the web

Comic book wet dream – A couple of comic fans roundtable about what their favorite comic movie (drawn from classic material) would be. Some of the pairings are pretty clever and you can even learn some things about comics! Which is what most of you want. Right?

2 many sequels – If sequels to 20 year old franchises wasn’t enough to prove Hollywood loved them some sequels, this over-long list will. The remakes don’t make them go down any easier either.

True nostalgia – I wanted to write a whole article about this (looking back on True Romance) but I haven’t really had time and the article was written a long time ago. But if you didn’t read it now, you better read it now. You might even learn a little bit about the history of Sicily.

Um…really?

Scarlett Johanson STILL has an album? I know this story broke a hell of a long time ago
(remember my excuse above) but I would have thought by now that she would have realized her folly and quickly taken back her embarrassing flub. Perhaps not. Either way it was a good opportunity to put up a picture of her. Hell, maybe the album is pretty good.

Who am I?

Could “Avatar” Win Best Picture?

By Brett Hogan

Last week, the trailer for James Cameron’s sci-fi experiment “Avatar” debuted. While initially unimpressed with the teaser, I began to wonder: Could this film win best picture?

Buzz has been generating for this movie for years. Years. The technology to make this movie didn’t exist when Cameron conceived it, so he invented it. When is the last time you heard of a director spearheading the invention of anything? The casting started in 2005. Most movies these days, even epics, are done in half that time. I could go on.

The most important thing to take away from all of this is that people are saying this will be the future of movies. Now, I don’t agree with the idea that CGI will become more prevalent than it already is. But I do believe that this will set the bar miles higher for sci-fi. I mean, that is what Titanic did. And that won some awards if memory serves.

I’ll bet you’re asking yourself, how can you even suggest that a film like this will win Best Picture when the initial trailer was nothing better than visual stimulation? Well, there are a couple of reasons. First, the Academy has expanded Best Picture to ten films. This doesn’t guarantee anything other than improved chances for most films on the cusp.

Second, after last year’s Oscars debacle, which saw the best film of the year, “The Dark Knight,” not only get shafted in awards but nominations as well, the Academy is pulling out all the stops to appease those with the loudest voices in the film industry, the fanboys. Now, the Academy probably didn’t lose anything because of that other than some viewers of the award show. Perhaps if people are again outraged with the winners or nominees, the heads of the Academy would lose their jobs. So this is all about the Academy protecting itself, which is not so outrageous.

Third, there is an economic motive here. I’ve heard this film will cost $190 million, not counting the R&D costs associated with Cameron’s inventions or the cost of getting 3-D cameras into every theater in the country. The Academy will do everything in its power to get people into the seats and make this the next “Titanic” or “The Dark Knight.” But the Academy doesn’t have much power, besides nominating and awarding, so they will slap the “Nominated for Best Picture” moniker onto every commercial and print ad to get the people who didn’t believe the critics to relent and see this movie.

Of course, all of this is pure conjecture, and no revolutionary film (Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, etc.) has ever won the Best Picture category because it changed the game. Except maybe Titanic. But still, could this movie actually win? My answer is no but a nomination is certain and who knows what could happen from there. We’ll know more come February 2010.
