Bob’s Golden Globe Predictions
By Bob 1/11/2008
Raise your hand if you are more excited than ever for the Golden Globes this year. I know I am. An hour long press conference, this is the way it should be. Just announce the winners, and let everybody talk about it later. The three hour show is way to long, way to boring, and pretty much pointless in my mind. It’s almost as bad as when the MLB gives out its awards over the course of an entire month after the season is over, just so that they keep people’s minds on the game, or the hour long Heisman Trophy show, when the award isn’t presented until the end. So, as excited as I am, here is what I think is going to happen in each category, and what I think should happen.
Best Motion Picture-Drama
-What Should Win: There Will Be Blood
-What Will Win:
No Country For Old Men
This category is really a toss up, both films were excellent, and I would be really pleased if either of them won. However, while I personally think Blood is a little bit better (essentially because of Daniel Day-Lewis’s astounding performance, I think the award will be given to the Coen Brother’s tour-de-force. Really, as long as American Gangster and Atonement do not win, I’ll be happy.
Best Motion Picture-Comedy
-What Should Win: Juno
-What Will Win:
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
I have never really been a big Tim Burton fan, or a big Johnny Depp fan, and I don’t really like musicals, or gory films, so I have thus far stayed away from Sweeney Todd. However, it seems to me that not only do people love Depp and Burton, but they are saying that it’s their time. However, I would love to see a Juno victory here. The film was unbelievably enjoyable, Diablo Cody’s screenplay pulled you in, and Jason Reitman continued to show that he is one of the most talented directors in the business.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama
-Who Should Win: Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood)
-Who Will Win: Day-Lewis

Simply put, this was one of the greatest performances of ALL TIME. Day-Lewis’s performance as Daniel Plainview (the turn-of-the-century oil man) is right up there with Robert De Niro’s turn as Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull. It was an incredibly nuanced performance which saw Day-Lewis become a completely different person whose greedy nature leads him to a life of solitude.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama
-Who Should Win: Angelina Jolie (A Mighty Heart)
-Who Will Win: Julie Christie (Away from Her)
This is always one of the more difficult categories for me to determine because the films that are nominated here aren’t matched in many other categories. I also have to admit as a bad critic, I have not actually seen any of the performances nominated here. However, I believe that Angelina Jolie’s performance is much overlooked because her film came out over the summer. She looked exactly like Mariane Pearl, and received a lot of good reviews for the film when it was released. Recently, however, Christie has received a lot of good buzz for her role as an Alzheimer’s patient who falls in love with a man when she can’t remember her husband. I think she will take this category.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy
-Who Should Win: Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street)
-Who Will Win: Depp

Depp’s win here will set up an Oscar showdown with Daniel Day-Lewis, which will eventually prevent Depp from winning a statue. If there is a surprise here, I would go with Ryan Gosling for Lars and the Real Girl, he has made several good films lately, and will surely start winning awards sooner rather than later.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy
-Who Should Win: Ellen Page (Juno)
-Who Will Win: Amy Adams (Enchanted)
People just seemed to love the live action Disney princess story, and as excellent as Page was, I think Adams might just secure the upset here because so many people loved the film. I also think that people like to give these awards to people that are “deserving” and Ellen Page really has not appeared in as much as Adams has thus far. Adams was also excellent in a supporting role in Charlie Wilson’s War.
Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture
-Who Should Win: Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton)
-Who Will Win: Javier Bardem (
No Country For Old Men)

I have trouble explaining to people who have seen No Country, but have not seen Clayton how excellent Wilkinson is in the later. While Bardem’s performance was amazing, Wilkinson was hauntingly brilliant as a top litigator who literally goes crazy. I would be pleased if either actor wins the award (or even Philip Seymour Hoffman for his hilarious role in Charlie Wilson’s War), but I just think that Wilkinson not only brought out everything he had for Clayton, but he is also really deserving of this recognition.
Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture
-Who Should Win: Anybody but Julia Roberts (but seriously Amy Ryan for Gone Baby Gone)
-Who Will Win: Cate Blanchett (I’m Not There)
I don’t think an iconic musician who happens to be a man has every been portrayed on screen by a women before. As great as Amy Ryan, Tilda Swinton, and Saoirse Ronan might have been, they really don’t stand a chance against Blanchett’s Bob Dylan in this category. As a side note, I don’t really know why Roberts was nominated, she wasn’t even ok in the film, and brought that production down in my opinion.
Best Director
-Who Should Win: Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood)
-Who Will Win: Joel and Ethan Coen (
No Country for Old Men)

It is unbelievable that PTA was not nominated for this award. Without him, Blood would have never happened. He is the one who brought such excellent performances out of Day-Lewis and Dano, and he also wrote the film, and was certainly influential in the excellent cinematography. I believe he deserves the award, but the Coen brothers are equally deserving. Their take on the barren Texas landscapes was beautifully haunting, and the lack of dialogue that was used said more than any amount of dialogue could.
Best Screenplay
-Who Should Win: Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men)
-Who Will Win: Diablo Cody (Juno)
Again, while both scripts were excellent, I loved the lack of words throughout many sections of No Country. I also thought that Anton Chigurh’s lines were all excellent as they were horrifying yet funny at the same time. Cody’s script was excellent as well, but there were times when I felt she had gone a little too far with the stylized speech of various characters. If either of these two win, it will be much deserved.
Best Television Series-Drama
-What Should Win: Friday Night Lights
-What Will win: Some Highly Inferior Show
Every awards show that passes which does not award the cast and crew of Friday Night Lights for their excellence makes me care less and less about television awards. While film awards are fairer because voters are able to at least see most of the films, television awards are granted based on only seeing one episode, and this can not tell a person how great a show actually is. My only hope is that next year’s Emmy voters will realize this, and right the wrong that is going on its second year.
Best Television Series-Comedy
-What Should Win: Entourage
-What Will Win:
30 Rock
I’m convinced that voters will do everything in their power to ensure that 30 Rock can not be cancelled. I have tried to watch this show several times, and I just can’t bring myself to laughing at all. Entourage on the other hand is one of the funniest, most addicting shows on television, and rarely gets the recognition it deserves (except, of course, for Jeremy Piven).
Best Actor in a TV Series-Comedy
-Who Should Win: Steve Carell (The Office)
-Who Will Win: Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies)
Carell has recently been excellent and is consistently one of the funniest people on one of televisions funniest shows. He was especially good when he was put between his girlfriend and his company in the final episode before the strike ruined all that is good in the world. However, these awards shows love to save shows from cancellation, and I think they will award Lee Pace, who has also been really good on Pushing Daisies (even though I don’t think he or the show are funny at all).
Best Actress in a TV Series-Comedy
-Who Should Win: I have no idea
-Who Will Win: I have no idea
The only one of these shows I actually watch (Pushing Daisies) I was unaware of its status as a comedy until it was nominated for Golden Globes as such. While Friel is solid in the show, I would not giver her an award that should be given to a woman that is actually funny. Ferrera won last year, so she probably won’t win again, making Tina Fey the likely front-runner?
Best Actor and Actress in a TV Series-Drama
-Who Should Win: Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)
-Who Will Win: I don’t know and I don’t care

Every time I get the opportunity, I will bring up the injustice that is the fact that Friday Night Lights is not nominated for any of the more publicized awards. It wins Peabody Awards, AFI names it one of the ten best TV programs, but when the lights are aimed on a stage, Chandler and Britton are never recognized. This is the biggest travesty in the entertainment industry.
Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series
-Who Should Win: Kevin Dillon (Entourage)
-Who Will Win: William Shatner (Boston Legal)
In the early years of Entourage, everybody was certain that Jeremy Piven was what made the show great. I don’t know if we missed it than, but I am certain now that Kevin Dillon is the funniest person on this show, and I know it is only a matter of time before he is recognized for making the t-shirt tucked into jeans a new style. Chance are that won’t be this year, and the Shatner will win this award.
Best Supporting Actress in a TV Series
-Who Should Win: Jenna Fischer (The Office)
-Who Will Win: Ummmmmmmm
At least I am being honest when I don’t watch any of the nominated shows (unlike the above movie section where I make claims about a couple films I haven’t seen). Really though, Fischer really should have won something for her performances last May when she walked across the coals on the beach, gave an awesome speech about how she used to be friends with Jim, and then started to cry when she thought he was gone. Do these voters actually watch television, or do they nominate names they pick out of a hat?
